This demonstrates that there are still Orthodox communities flourishing in the world today despite all of the temptations and other religions in our culture today.

Photographer’s statement: The Holy Power of the Virgin is a little chapel in Athens built in the 16th century, now overshadowed by a newly built hotel. This small church has withstood the test of time and even surrounded by many shops and hotels, stands as a reminder of Orthodoxy in this modern world.

2019-20 St. Kosmas Annual Photography Contest for Orthodox Children

Theme for 2019-20 Photography Contest:  TO BE ANNOUNCED June 1, 2019, in time for summer travels

Submission Period:  January 1 - March 31, 2020

Eligibility:  Contestant must be an Orthodox Christian (baptized Orthodox or officially enrolled as a catechumen in the Orthodox Church) and must be born in the year 2000 or later. There are no eligibility restrictions based on Orthodox jurisdiction, type of schooling, or country of residence. 

Prize for Winning Photo: $100 for the child, plus an additional $500 credit towards the family's registration & lodging costs at a future WEST Conference sponsored by the St. Kosmas Homeschool Association.

Rules:

  • Photographs must be in digital format. Only online entries will be eligible. No print or film submissions will be accepted for entry into this Contest. The photograph need not be taken with a digital camera; scans of negatives, transparencies, or photographic prints are acceptable.

  • All digital files entered must be 5 megabytes or smaller, must be in JPEG or JPG format, and must be at least 1,600 pixels wide (if a horizontal image) or 1,600 pixels tall (if a vertical image).

  • Minor burning, dodging and/or color correction is acceptable. Hand tinting is acceptable, as is cropping. Fish-eye lenses are acceptable. High dynamic range images (HDR) and stitched panoramas are acceptable only if the combined parts are all made around the same time. Any changes to the original Photograph not itemized here are unacceptable and will render the Photograph ineligible for a prize.

  • The photograph, in its entirety, must be a single work of original material taken by the Contest entrant. By entering the Contest, entrant represents, acknowledges, and warrants that the submitted photograph is an original work created solely by the entrant, that the photograph does not infringe on the copyrights, trademarks, moral rights, rights of privacy/publicity or intellectual property rights of any person or entity, and that no other party has any right, title, claim, or interest in the photograph.

  • Out of respect for the privacy of the monastics, St. Kosmas Homeschool Association will not be accepting any photo entries in this contest that are portrait views of monastics. Photos depicting monastic life are welcome as long as the photo does not present the face of an individual monastic and the identity of the monastic cannot be determined by the general public from the photo.
